Sharing mobility for small municipalities: how to launch a sustainable and scalable service
Sharing mobility is not just for big cities anymore
For years, sharing mobility has been portrayed as a metropolitan phenomenon. Today, however, it is increasingly clear that small and mid-sized municipalities can also benefit from light, high-impact sustainable mobility solutions. In these contexts, sharing mobility services can connect railway stations to city centers, cover last-mile mobility needs, support schools and public offices, enhance the tourist experience, and reduce private car usage for short urban trips.
The real issue is not the size of the territory. What truly matters is having the right tools to launch a service without unnecessary complexity and with a sustainable, scalable model over time. Thanks to streamlined regulations — such as the direct award procedure provided by Art. 50 of Italian Legislative Decree 36/2023 for services below €140,000 — and turnkey mobility services for municipalities like B2-Ride, even smaller local authorities can activate a sharing mobility service without major upfront investments or specialized technical expertise.
Demand is solid, but supply tends to concentrate
The market is entering a consolidation phase. Data from the National Sharing Mobility Observatory confirms stable demand, with further growth projected in 2025. At the same time, a familiar pattern is emerging: operators tend to focus on larger, more profitable urban areas, while smaller municipalities often struggle to maintain continuous and economically sustainable services.
In small towns, therefore, the question is no longer whether sharing mobility is needed. The real challenge is how to implement sustainable urban mobility services that remain financially and operationally viable over time.
The challenge is not starting — it is managing complexity
In smaller contexts, sharing mobility projects rarely fail due to a lack of demand. More often, they stall because operational complexity appears overwhelming. Fleet management, charging infrastructure, maintenance, vehicle rebalancing, and real-time monitoring all require specific skills, appropriate tools, and dedicated resources.
As a result, many municipalities hesitate before even starting, convinced that smart mobility solutions are viable only in large cities with specialized teams and significant financial capacity.
But what if everything you needed were already in place?
B2-Ride: A turnkey mobility platform designed to grow with you
B2-Ride was created to enable local authorities and operators to design, launch, and manage a sharing mobility service without building everything from scratch. It is not simply software, but a complete turnkey ecosystem that combines a robust fleet management platform, vehicles, and operational know-how — all structured to fit lean budgets and streamlined public sector organizations.
With B2-Ride, municipalities can start with a small fleet and expand progressively. There is no mandatory minimum to launch and no upper limit when the service is ready to scale. The platform supports multiple vehicle types, including e-bikes, e-scooters, scooters, cars, and microcars, making it a flexible solution for integrated micro-mobility services.
Local authorities can begin with a single vehicle category and integrate additional options as demand evolves and mobility patterns change. The system is also designed for seamless MaaS integration, with ready-to-use APIs that enable interoperability within broader smart mobility ecosystems.
More than technology: onboarding and operational support
For small municipalities, the real value lies in the support model. B2-Ride includes a structured onboarding phase designed to make the service fully operational even for organizations starting from zero experience in managing public mobility services.
Rather than simply delivering a platform, we guide clients through training, service configuration, definition of operational areas and pricing models, fleet sizing, and hands-on support during the first months of operation. This significantly reduces trial and error and allows municipalities to rely on a proven operational framework built by professionals who manage sharing mobility systems daily in the field.
Operational simplicity for lean public teams
Once the service is active, simplicity becomes essential. Municipalities with limited resources need centralized, intuitive control through a single dashboard that allows them to monitor fleet performance, manage operational rules and service areas, and intervene quickly when issues arise.
The objective is not to add complexity through excessive features, but to simplify daily management while maintaining a reliable, measurable service aligned with long-term sustainable mobility goals.
A regulatory advantage: faster activation with reduced bureaucracy
In addition to the operational model, there is a practical administrative benefit. Under Italian Legislative Decree 36/2023, services and supplies below €140,000 can be awarded directly. For small and mid-sized municipalities, this can translate into a more streamlined procurement process and faster activation timelines, enabling decision-makers to focus on service quality, KPIs, governance, and continuous improvement rather than procedural burdens.
Start simple. Grow with your territory.
Sharing mobility is no longer a privilege reserved for large cities. With B2-Ride, municipalities gain access to a complete smart mobility ecosystem that includes the technology platform, vehicles, operational know-how, and structured support needed to successfully implement sustainable local mobility services.
It is a scalable, future-ready model designed specifically for small municipalities ready to rethink local transportation and accelerate their transition toward smarter, more sustainable mobility.

B2-Ride integrates Segway: a more connected platform for the new era of micromobility
Electric micromobility — including bicycles, e-scooters and shared light vehicles — is reshaping the way people move within cities.
Today, it makes up over 90% of all sharing mobility rentals in Italy. It is expected to grow by 20% in 2025. This will lead to more than 60 million rentals each year, according to the 9th National Report on Sharing Mobility.
These services create hundreds of millions of euros each year. They provide economic and environmental benefits. They help lower CO₂ emissions and reduce urban traffic and congestion costs.
The sector is growing fast because of a common need. There is a demand for better technology solutions.
These solutions must be reliable and scalable. They should help both public and private operators. The goal is to provide more efficient, connected, and sustainable sharing services.
A new chapter for B2-Ride: integrating Segway
B2-Ride is improving its technology. They are adding the Segway Lite L60E e-scooter. They are also adding the Urban A300 e-bike to their platform.
These are two of the most famous vehicles in the world of micromobility. People recognize them for their reliability, strong build, and global use.
This integration enhances the native features of the B2-Ride platform, enabling operators to:
- natively manage Segway e-bikes and e-scooters already deployed worldwide;
- configure and monitor customized speed thresholds, adaptable by area or usage type;
- manage smart alerts and notifications for the integrated models. This includes tip-over detection, unauthorized movement, and low battery.
- enable remote control of locking, unlocking, booking and parking;
- optimize operating areas thanks to advanced zone management and dynamic usage limits.
The Segway protocol works with the OMNI IoT box. This makes it easier to connect with many existing fleets. It also speeds up the setup time for new services. For operators, this translates into immediate access to proven, standardized vehicles supported by a ready-to-use and highly customizable technological infrastructure.
Technology evolves, the platform grows
Analysts expect the global Segway market to reach over 2 billion dollars by 2034. It is a key example of innovation in electric mobility. Their research on safety, performance, and connectivity has made the L60E and A300 models popular. Operators choose them for their reliability and quality.
For B2-Ride, this technology change expands its services. It is a big step forward for the platform. It can now connect and manage fleets with different brands and vehicles. This ensures stability, integration, and compatibility with the main IoT protocols available.
Technology that connects
With this integration, B2-Ride boosts its mission as a Shared Mobility Enabler. It offers a complete and customizable platform. This platform helps operators who want to start or grow a shared micromobility service.
A step toward a future where technology and sustainability work together is here. This is thanks to the partnership between two leaders in electric mobility: B2-Ride and Segway.

Pikyrent and B2-Ride at MOVE 2025 in London
We were in London to attend MOVE – Mobility Re-Imagined 2025, the world’s leading event focused on the future of transportation and mobility solutions. Every year, MOVE brings together innovators, industry leaders, startups, policymakers, and major players to discuss sustainability, electric vehicles, artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, and urban mobility.

This event wasn’t just the perfect setting to envision the future of mobility—it was also a great opportunity to build connections and explore new business prospects. That’s exactly why B2-Ride and Pikyrent were there: to bring our vision of mobility to an even more international stage.
Presenting B2-Ride: a new dimension of shared mobility
In the dedicated startup area, we officially introduced B2-Ride, the white-label SaaS platform developed by Auriga for launching and managing corporate mobility services, delivery vehicle fleets, business fleets, and urban sharing solutions.
B2-Ride is the result of a synergy between Auriga’s 30 years of expertise in ICT and Pikyrent’s hands-on experience in managing shared electric vehicle fleets. It’s a turnkey solution designed for companies, local operators, and startups aiming to enter the shared mobility space without starting from scratch.
Our strength? We truly understand what it means to manage and share an electric fleet. Behind the scenes is advanced technology—AI, IoT, and smart APIs—but what really makes the difference is the ease of use in configuring every aspect: from pricing models to geolocation, from predictive maintenance to real-time reporting.
Thanks to an intuitive management dashboard, interactive map, and continuous monitoring tools, users can operate fleets in free-floating, station-based, or private-use modes, optimizing both time and resources.
B2-Ride is a bridge between the idea of shared mobility and its real-world implementation, in a way that’s both sustainable and efficient.

Proven flexibility and real-world results
During the event, we shared several success stories that showcase the platform’s flexibility and scalability, tailored to meet the specific needs of each customer.
One standout case: Vado Service, a company based in Grottaglie (Italy), which launched an electric scooter and bike-sharing service for residents and tourists using B2-Ride. We also introduced a new project currently in rollout, which will offer electric scooter rental in both free-floating and station-based modes for another upcoming client.
MOVE 2025 served as an international stage to present a fully Italian product, but also as a valuable moment of dialogue and inspiration. AI, logistics, and integrated transport are widely discussed—but there’s still too little emphasis on the need for flexibility and adaptability across different contexts, cities, and user profiles. That’s exactly what B2-Ride aims to provide: customized solutions that go beyond borders.
As our CEO Antonella Comes remarked:
Shared mobility is entering a new phase, where B2C and B2B models converge and strengthen one another. Technology can be an enabler—but it also takes vision and practicality.
We truly believe that. And we’re convinced B2-Ride can be a strategic lever for anyone looking to launch a green mobility project—without wasting time or opportunities.
For us, MOVE 2025 was just the beginning.

This digital mobility solution offers high adaptability, helping Vado Rent tailor services to the local mobility context while improving operational flexibility.
Real Benefits and a Positive Urban Impact
Vado Rent confirmed that B2-Ride played a key role not only in technical fleet management, but also as a tool for continuous service improvement. Access to live, actionable data improved response times and service efficiency, while the partnership with the B2-Ride team ensured solid technical and strategic support.
The results? A noticeable reduction in private car use and the spread of a sustainable mobility culture in Grottaglie—benefiting both residents and visitors.
Future Plans: Expanding Smart Mobility in New Cities
Vado Rent is now ready to scale. The roadmap includes:
- Growing the fleet of electric vehicles
- Introducing loyalty features, discounts, and real-time promotions
